University of Melbourne

Established in 1853, the University of Melbourne is a public-spirited institution that makes distinctive contributions to society in research, teaching and knowledge transfer.

The University’s strong international reputation is underpinned by excellence in teaching and learning, and its status as Australia's highest-ranked research University with over 100 research centres and institutes. Its ongoing pursuit of new teaching methodologies keeps it at the forefront of higher education. The University offers comprehensive academic programs that can be tailored to accommodate talents and goals, encouraging students to explore broad intellectual, social, political and historical contexts both in and outside the classroom.

In 2008 a new curriculum known as the Melbourne Model will strengthen the University's position as a leading educational institution. The aim is to take the best and brightest students and give them a profound education that challenges them and gives them skills to be successful professionals, valuable citizens and important contributors to their communities.

Talented people from all over the world come to visit, study and work at the University of Melbourne. At last count, the University's student community of 44 000 included more than 9800 international students from over 100 countries. It is located in Australia’s most highly concentrated precinct of medical research institutes, hospitals and private-sector knowledge-based industries, including Bio21, one of Australia’s most sophisticated medical research and biotechnological initiatives. With a fine network of research libraries, which provide access to a wealth of electronic databases and more than three million books in over 20 languages.

Consistently ranked among the leading universities in the world, with international peers placing it in the top 20 worldwide, and employers placing it amongst the top 10, its alumni network spans 100 countries with more than 210,000 members.
